Hook是鉤子，這裡是指釣魚用的魚鉤，所以這個說法是一種形容。一條魚被魚鉤掛住了，那牠就有大麻煩了，但是如果你把魚從魚鉤上拿下去，那牠可能就不會有麻煩了。

所以let/get someone off the hook的意思就是讓人擺脫困境、避免麻煩。

例句：At first, Sam was suspected of stealing money from the safe, but he was let off the hook after security camera footage showed it was someone else.
